Reaffirming our commitment to transgender students, faculty and staff

March 29, 2019

To the University of the Pacific Community,

Today, University of the Pacific kicks off Pride Week, which includes a series of events designed to increase awareness of Pacific's LGTBQIA community and to promote an atmosphere of inclusion, respect and civility. This Sunday, March 31, is International Transgender Day of Visibility, another opportunity to celebrate transgender people and raise awareness of the discrimination they face. I encourage you to promote and participate in these events.

As we prepare for these events, changes to the federal definition of gender under Title IX are being considered that, if implemented, would define gender as male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the sex assigned at birth.

Understandably, the impact of these potential changes can raise fear, anger and confusion for many people in our community.

Pacific joins institutions of higher education across the country in responding to proposed Title IX changes by reaffirming our commitment to providing a safe, equitable and supportive educational environment for our transgender students, faculty and staff.

In support of the Gender Recognition Act that went into effect in California on Jan. 1, Pacific is updating its student systems, human resources systems and workflow processes. Academic Affairs, Student Life, Human Resources and the Title IX office will provide academic and administrative units with technical guidance in the coming months.

I want to remind you of resources to assist transgender members of our community and anyone impacted by gender-based discrimination and misconduct:

As one of our important values, diversity and inclusion undergird what defines our university community. Please join me in affirming the university's support and recognition of transgender and gender nonbinary members of our community.
