Eberhardt School of Business students beginning in 2020 will be able to take courses in sport business and take advantage of an internship in the sports industry.

University of the Pacific is the first university in California to offer a sport management concentration in an accredited business school and reflects a nationwide trend toward studying sport as a business.

"Folding sport management into the Eberhardt School of Business provides students with a broad-based business education along with industry-specific knowledge and experience that gives our graduates stronger career prospects in the industry," said Eberhardt Dean Tim Carroll. "It also provides more long-term flexibility as our graduates' careers evolve."

The concentration, which puts a student on a path to a bachelor's degree, positions the university to capitalize on tremendous growth opportunities in the sport industry. According to PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), American sport was a $71 billion industry in 2018 and is projected to grow revenues 13% over the next five years. Growth in marketing mediums, media rights, facility construction, and ticket sales has created an increased demand for graduates with business skills in finance, analytics and marketing. By combining a foundation of business skills with a portfolio of courses directed to each element of the sport industry, graduates of the program will be well-positioned for success.

The study of sport management has a long history at Pacific. Since the early 1990s, the College of the Pacific's Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences has offered a curriculum in sport management. Alumni of the program have worked throughout the sports industry-in intercollegiate athletics, professional sports, sport services and sporting goods manufacturing. Throughout the program's history, sport management students and faculty have partnered with local and regional sport organizations for research, event management, experiential learning, and internships.

These learning opportunities will be enhanced by housing sport management in the Eberhardt School of Business. The Eberhardt School is accredited by AACSB International and has 25 full-time faculty members serving approximately 525 undergraduate and 40 graduate students. The school offers a bachelor's degree in business administration with specializations in accounting, arts and entertainment, business law, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, international business, management and human resources, marketing, management information sciences, and sport management; a B.S. in accounting, and a master's degree in accounting.
