50 YEARS OF CO-OP: Something to ROAR About

In 1969, the Engineering Academic Council and the University Academic Affairs Committee approved our Cooperative Education Program (fondly known as CO-OP). Immediately, Dean Robert Heyborne and Professor Helm Haas (the first full time CO-OP Coordinator) went to work meeting with potential employers, community colleges, and high schools to spread the news (the very first ROAR).

The effects were immediate.
   • In Fall 1970, enrollment for the School of Engineering jumped 83%
   • Among the first organizations to partner and hire CO-OP students were Hewlett Packard Enterprise,
City of Stockton Public Works Department, Siegfried Engineering, Teichert Construction,
Lawrence Livermore National Lab, and Granite Construction

It's so very exciting to say these organizations continue to hire our students, and this year we are celebrating over 4,600 students who have participated in our cooperative education program.

Celebrating our ROAR
During Homecoming and Family Weekend on October 12, 2019, we hosted our 50th Anniversary CO-OP Celebration.

 Celebrating Our ROAR

Commemorating our ROAR
During Homecoming 2020, we will bury a time capsule, celebrating 50 years of CO-OP, under The Rock. The time capsule will be designed by the SOECS class of 2020, and will include pictures and memories of CO-OP Alumni experiences. We will include digital memory books, physical mementos, and more. Join the celebration!

Share your CO-OP memories in one of these ways:
   • Complete the online form:
   • On the SOECS Facebook page:
   • Email them to the SOECS:
   • Mail copies to: SOECS CO-OP 50th at UOP 3601 Pacific Ave., Stockton, CA 95211

The time capsule will be opened on the 100th Anniversary of CO-OP at Homecoming Fall 2069.

Investing in our ROAR
We are pleased to announce that we received a leadership gift of $25,000 to jumpstart fundraising efforts for the "Endowment Celebrating 50 Years of CO-OP." Pacific is committed to establishing this endowment to ensure students have access to these unique learning experiences, regardless of their financial situation. By making a gift to support the Endowment Celebrating 50 Years of CO-OP, you will ensure future generations of students have access to these transformative learning experiences, regardless of financial background.  Your support will specifically assist with flights, lodging, and other travel and ancillary expenses required to participate in CO-OP (domestic and global), study abroad, academic exchange programs, international conferences, and other similar global engineering experiences. The more we raise, the more barriers we can remove for SOECS students-allowing them to focus on their CO-OP, studies, and professional growth.  Click here to make your gift today.

For questions about making your gift or to learn about other ways to support the SOECS, please contact Judy Nagai at or 209.932.2864.
