Concerto Competition

In the interest of health and safety, the Conservatory of Music is postponing operations of the Pacific Youth Symphony through the end of the fall 2020 semester.

Eligibility

Applicants who play an orchestral instrument must:

  1. Be members in good standing of Pacific Youth Symphony or spring semester orchestra applicants. The competition is also open to singers, pianists, and instrumentalists not normally part of symphonic instrumentation: for example the saxophone.
  2. Be born on or after January 1, 2002.
  3. Reside in one of the following counties: Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, Sacramento, San Joaquin or Stanislaus.

  4. A non-refundable $50 application fee is required.

Repertoire and Accompaniament

Applicants may choose either the first or last movement of a concerto (including cadenzas) with orchestral accompaniment, or a single movement solo work with orchestral accompaniment. The work chosen should be from the standard repertoire for that instrument and performed from memory. Orchestral score and parts must be easily obtainable (purchase only) by Pacific Youth Symphony.

Applicants must provide three (3) copies of the solo part on the day of the competition.

Applicants shall provide their own accompanist, at their own expense for this competition.

Additional Guidelines

Applicants will be contacted with their approximate audition times. Warm-up space will be provided.
The chosen candidate(s) to perform with Pacific Youth Symphony will be notified within three (3) days of the  competition. Other candidates will be notified by email within one week. Pacific Youth Symphony reserves the right to make no selection if the adjudicators find no one qualified.

Winning candidate(s) must be available:

  • To perform with the PYSymphony at their Spring Concert
  • To rehearse with PYSymphony at the Spring Concert dress rehearsal and
  • To rehearse with PYSymphony at as many Tuesday night rehearsals prior to the Spring Concert concert as the Music Director deems necessary.
  • Must join PYSymphony for the spring semester with tuition paid (if applicable).
