Staff and Guests Present: Brodnick, Rogers.
Minutes: Minutes of the June 11 meeting were reviewed, revised and approved.
Announcements: Gilbertson reminded everyone of the annual IPC dinner which was to be held at his house that evening. Departing members were to be recognized and new members to be welcomed.
Standing Reports: Cavanaugh reported the following items:
- The University has opened the bids for the Wendell Phillips Center addition (Humanities Center). The bid will be awarded next week to the winning contractor.
- The Brookside sidewalk project has been approved by the Stockton City Council and should be completed this summer.
- Three contractors have been identified for the new foot bridge across the Calaveras River. Construction should be completed by the end of August/early September.
ACADEMIC RESOURCE PLANNING: ENVIRONMENTAL SCAN
School of Engineering: Dean Ravi presented an environmental scan for the School of Engineering. He identified the School's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The Dean also identified the external factors that might affect the engineering profession (lack of qualified students, competition from state schools, limited facilities, etc.).
Gladys L. Benerd School of Education: Dean Nagel presented the environmental scan for the Gladys L. Bernerd School of Education. Challenges for the educational field were discussed (low salary, burn out, multiple credentialing agencies, high cost of tuition, etc.). Opportunities included that the school was constantly alert to change, an accredited program in which students can be credentialed in four years, collaboration with other Schools of Education, and School's willingness to explore and implement programs from outside education.
PROJECTIONS FOR CAREERS/PROFESSIONS
Rob Brodnick and Mike Rogers presented a report on the future projections of careers and professions in California and the United States by the United States Department of Labor. The report covered the fastest growing occupations by training or level of education. Of significant note was that the California state population was expected to increase by 40 million people by 2010. This increase, coupled with the increase in the overall population of the United States, will see an overall rise in the employment which will grow faster than the labor force. Professional and related occupations will also have the greatest increase in job growth both in the United States and California.
Next Meeting: August 15, 2003
