Our Doctoral Psychology Internship Program

We are an APA-accredited University College Counseling internship site located on a beautiful campus in Northern California. We provide for the development of competent and versatile professionals in the field and we are committed to providing experiences that allow for interpersonal depth, and enhanced clinical ability within a multicultural framework. Your internship experience with us will focus on working with a diverse college-age population in a variety of modalities with the intention of helping you become a confident, competent, and culturaly sensitive clinician.

The aim of our doctoral psychology internship program is:

  • To prepare doctoral psychology interns to become competent, versatile, and culturally aware Health Service Psychologists who engage in, and help others attain, lasting achievement and responsible leadership in their careers and communities.

The strengths of our program include:

  1. We have a distinct emphasis on diversity and inclusion training and supervision that applies directly to working with our diverse selection of students (including but not limited to ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender orientation).
  2. We provide dynamic training related to the multifaceted roles needed for a career in college counseling.
  3. We have a strong focus on consultation and outreach skills and provide numerous opportunities to work with students, parents, faculty, and campus partners.
  4. We have a well built group therapy program that will provide you with strong didactic training and experience in all types of group therapy (i.e., general process groups, support groups, and psychoeducational groups).
  5. We provide a supportive, open, and understanding work environment, and have a true open door policy where our staff are available for our doctoral trainees throughout each day

Our doctoral interns provide the following culturally aware treatment and services:

  • Triages, solution sessions, and brief psychotherapy sessions (group, individual, and couples).
  • Emergency and crisis services.
  • Brief assessment of alcohol and substance abuse on a college campus; ongoing outcome assessment through the use of the CCAPS; and ADHD assessments (per request, availability, and training).
  • Outreach, preventative programming, and consultation services for students, faculty/staff, and parents.

We are committed to promoting excellence and competence with psychological skill levels, and strive to provide experiences that allow for interpersonal depth and enhanced clinical ability within a humanistic and multicultural framework. The internship year is an opportunity to further develop areas of interest interns may have, and concentration and emphasis on these areas is encouraged and supported through the training model. The internship program includes a clinical caseload, individual supervision, training supervision, psychological assessment, outreach, and consultation.

Applying for an Internship

We are an  APA-accredited doctoral internship program ( APPIC member #127211). We seek high-energy individuals who are open to learning, able to balance multiple roles and responsibilities, receptive to feedback, and motivated to develop a wide range of skills that are expected of a health service psychologist.

Qualifications of Applicants

To be eligible for internship at CAPS, applicants must be enrolled in an APA-accredited doctoral program in either counseling or clinical psychology and should provide documentation on their AAPI that they have professional experience at the practicum level that is consistent with the training goals and objectives of CAPS. Beyond this, we also require the following qualifications:

  1. A minimum of 450 hours of direct face-to-face clinical contact by the time of the interview.
  2. All coursework toward the doctoral degree must be completed prior to the start of internship.
  3. Comprehensive exams, or their equivalent, must be completed prior to the application deadline.
  4. US citizenship or an international student with sponsorship through another organization.
  5. Successfully proposed your dissertation prior to the application deadline.
  6. Certification of internship readiness by the candidate's academic program is required.
  7. Demonstrated experience with the college-age population (not necessarily at a university).

Application Forms, Procedures and Deadlines

Applications are due each year on November 21st by 11:59EDT to be considered for our training program. In order to be considered you must:

  • Submit a completed AAPI through APPIC and NMS.
  • Use your cover letter and essays to discuss how you are a good fit with the internship program at University of the Pacific CAPS, and to help us better understand what your goals are for internship. 
  • Have references that reflect your most recent work, and at least two of your three references should be from licensed psychologists who are familiar with your clinical work.

This internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.
